New to Medicare:
- Learn about your Medicare choices.
There are four parts of Medicare.
- Find out how and when you can sign up.
When you first enroll in Medicare and during certain times of the year, you can choose how you get your Medicare coverage.
Already have Medicare:
- You don’t need to sign up for Medicare each year. However, you should review your Medicare health and prescription drug coverage annually with your agent and make the necessary changes if your current plan no longer meets your needs or if you could lower your out-of-pocket expenses.
- Mark your calendar with these important dates and deadlines! This may be the only chance you have each year to make changes to your coverage.
Important Dates
Important Dates & Deadlines
As you may know, Medicare has multiple dates and deadlines on an annual basis. We monitor these changes and advise our clients when appropriate. As your agents, we'll always have the latest information you need to make an informed decision.
January 1
New coverage begins if you made a change. If you kept your existing coverage and your plan’s costs or benefits changed, those changes will also start on this date.
January 1 - March 31
If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can make a change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch back to Original Medicare (and join a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan) once during this time. Any changes you make will be effective the first of the month after the plan gets your request.
October 1
Start comparing your current coverage with other options. You may be able to save money.
October 15 - December 7
You can make changes to your coverage during this time.
- Medicare Annual Election Period: This allows you to join, switch, or drop a Medi care Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan with coverage effective January 1.
- Open Enrollment Period: This allows Medicare Advantage enrollees to change Medicare Advantage Plans or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan, go back to Original Medicare, and enroll in a standalone Prescription Drug Plan.
- Part B General Enrollment: This is if you missed the initial Enrollment Period for obtaining Part B.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Rules about when you can make changes and the type of changes you can make are different for each SEP. Please contact us to see if you qualify for an SEP.
What are the Parts of Medicare?
Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Helps cover:
- Inpatient care in hospitals
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Hospice care
- Home health care
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Part C combines Part A, Part B and most often Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) into one insurance policy.
Helps cover:
- In most cases, you'll need to use in network Doctors
- Predictable copay costs
- Most often, but does not always, include drug coverage
Part B (Medical Insurance)
Helps cover:
- Services from doctors and other health care providers
- Outpatient care
- Home health care
- Durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and other equipment)
- Many preventive services (like screenings, shots or vaccines, and yearly “Wellness” visits)
Part D (Prescription drug)
*This plan is optional but timing is important to avoid a potential late enrollment penalty.
Helps cover:
- Cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines)
Part D plans are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set forth by Medicare.
